Ways to run an engine in from new... |
|
Well folks, Millsy requested a topic on running in engines from new following a comment from me, so here we go:
The first way to runa n engine in is to follow the manufactuers guidlines.. if we take the M3 for instance it states to stay below revs for the first 1200 miles.
Going off my past experience with Pete, all our motorbike have been hammered straight from the shop and even on trackdays before their first service...
We have never had any engine prolems and our bikes have always been fast and free reving compaired to some of our friends that frown on our antics... might say something...
So what is the best way? Babby a new engine or show it what its in for?
There is theory in the logic somewhere and I wil post a website article on this once we have a few ideas on the go...

the official way is to not over rev OR under rev as that can do just as much damage .. keep the engine purring along at a nice 2500 to 3500 revs on the motorway....just keep it from being thrashed for a couple of thousand miles .. that should do the trick
but unofficially, and especially if the engine is under warranty (as all of Ants probably are) thrash the fucker to death
EDIT... didnt realise the topic was refering to the M3.. that beasty will take some abuse.. more than most i would imagine

It's just to stop excessive engine wear whilst it beds in isn't it ??
Either way, it will need bedding in, so I would've imagined once everything's warmed up you could take it to the redline in 2nd or 3rd a couple of times to get things settling in.

I suppose it depends on the actual car and the calibre of engineering behind it. I think those of us who’ve had the misfortune to purchase a car from a UK dealer have been given the ‘don’t drive it past 55/60mph for the first 1000 miles’ crap. I’m aware that gearboxes wear to the driver’s style…yatta-yatta-ya. But, I’m still a great believer in the fact that a well-engineered machine should do its job from the outset – the only wear the car needs is the driver teaching it how he/she does their thing.
So, I plump for: romance it briefly with some gentle lovin’, then don’t waste any more time in thraping the nuts off it.
Then again, I have difficulty steering a shopping trolley around Sainsburys, so maybe I’m not the best one to have an opinion on this and sensibility will strike again, and you’ll all wisely ignore this….

I thought you had to just not over rev it for the first however many miles, normally till first service.
Yam, TDM900, you could notice the engine loosen off over the miles, and gradually feel better to use more of the revs...although this is not my personal experience.
But a lot has changed with modern engines, I reckon running in is far more critical if you bought a new old car if you know what I mean
I read somewhere that modern cars don't need running in....
So I dunno

Ok how to run an engine in....
My brother and I both collected our new bikes last year both blue and white Suzuki GSX-R.
My brother is a must follow the rules and run is like the book tells me, its still not run in and he wont come out with the lads till it is
I on the other hand collected from the shop was unable to ride the bike for the next week due to work commitments so the next Saturday I lent my bike to Ant as his new one hadnt arrived yet and he took it to Oulton park, on went the tyre warmers ready to play I told ant that all he had to do was keep it above 17000rpm for the day.
still too busy to ride it the bike, it was left untouched in the garage for a few weeks.Saturday morning I was collected by my support team and back to Oulton park we went. Again the tyre warmers went on I gave myself the same rule as Ant keep it above 17000.
The engine im sure is run in now or not who gives a shit, my bike has loved having the crap kicked out of it and Ive loved doing it.
On the other hand my brother is still running in and has yet to see its full potential and still hasn’t been out with the lads
You all ask but what if something goes wrong??? Warranty
But what about after the warranty??? You sold it 2 year before it ran out
Conclusion: DONT buy a used vehicle off Pete
xx
